Marinara Sauce for Italian Meatballs

Sauces
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 28-ounce can crushed tomato
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 6 fresh basil leaves, cut into thin strips
- In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion and cook until onion is translucent. Add the tomatoes and bring to a boil; lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, uncovered.
- Add the sugar and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the basil and simmer another 5 minutes. Serve.
