Nien-gao is very symbolic: the stickiness of the glutinous rice flour signifies that the family will be very cohesive and stick together. The round shape symbolizes the reunion of the family and the sugar stands for the sweetness of life. Sesame seeds sprinkled on top represent a desire for many children and the red date topping is for good luck.
