Come Join the Festivities at Mangoes at the Moana!
Join us at the Moana Surfrider for the 1st annual “Mangoes at the Moana” on Saturday, July 11, for a mango recipe contest, mango tastings, chef demos and more!
The free festivities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m include:
Moana will share one of his own secret mango recipes as he prepares a pancetta-wrapped onaga dish with a mango beurre blanc sauce, topped with mango relish. Honolulu Advertiser Food Editor Wanda Adams will also delight guests with her preparation of an upside down mango cake. Complimentary samples of both dishes will be served after the demonstrations.
Enter the recipe for your favorite mango bread or cake, or for a preserved mango recipe (wet or dry pickle or “seed,” or chutney; no jams or jellies, please)!
Finalists must commit to appear at the Mangoes @ The Moana event, bringing their recipe. Recipes will be featured in The Honolulu Advertiser and on the Share Your Table website. There will be 10 finalists in each category and three winners in each category (first, second and third) with prizes for each.
The rules:
- Recipes must use locally grown mangoes.
- One entry per person in each category.
- Entries may be mailed, faxed or e-mailed (address and deadlines below)
- Illegible entries will be disqualified.
- Include name, address and daytime phone (not to be made public); these should be typed or written on the same document as the recipe and all pages should be stapled together with page number, name and address on each.
- Recipes must be original or accurately credited and used with permission of the original source.
- Winners grant permission for the Moana hotel, the Honolulu Advertiser and Share Your Table to use their recipe in print and online.
- Recipes will be judged on taste, presentation and use of mangoes.
- Finalists must be present to win and must provide one cake or loaf in the cake and bread category or one jar in the pickle or chutney category.
- Accompaniments (garnish, crackers, etc.) are allowed.
ENTRY PERIOD: Now through July 2. Entries must be postmarked July 2 or earlier.

Chefs and chef hopefuls are invited to submit their best recipes online for pre-judging by Honolulu Advertiser Food Editor Wanda Adams, and finalists will be invited to put these recipes to the test in front of a panel of celebrity judges including Chef Chai Chaowasaree and 2008 Miss Hawaii Nicole Fox. Submission forms, rules and more information may be found below. Prizes include a two-night stay in an ocean front room at the Moana Surfrider, dinner for two ($150 value) at Beachhouse at the Moana, and a luxurious spa treatment ($150 value) at the Moana Lani Spa, A Heavenly Spa by Westin.Mango Farmers Demo and Tastings, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Banyan Courtyard
Hawaii’s mango farmers will provide free samples of the different varieties of mangoes that are grown on their farms. Join local farmer Mark Suiso of Makaha Mangoes and garden columnist Heidi Bornhorst in a “Know your Mango” seminar that will cover how to cultivate and grow a mango tree, the history of the mango, and varieties of mangoes in Hawaii. Other prominent local mango farmers will also be on hand to share their tips and first-hand knowledge of caring for mango trees.Lunch and afternoon tea, 12 – 3 p.m., The Veranda
Afternoon Tea at The Veranda is a local tradition with a selection of fine teas, delicious finger sandwiches, salads, scones and delicate pastries, and relaxing views of Waikiki Beach.
